Why Western Eye Press
A passion for publishing. Publishing in the old and original sense. From the Latin, publicare, to make public, to share with others.… Not just books, hardbound or softback, fiction or nonfiction. Not just art editions and art books. Not just handsome coffee-table phto books. Not just poetry books and broadsides. Not just ink-on-paper works, but eBooks too and — why not? — movies and videos. And genres that don't yet have names. The full spectrum! Our idea is simply to publish what we love and care about. What we create ourselves. And what our friends have created — not just friends but writers, artists and poets, both visual and verbal, whose work we admire.
That's why Western Eye Press. That's where we are going . . .
When Linde Waidhofer and I published our first photo book, High Color, Spectacular Wildflowers of the Rockies, in 1987, publishing was hard and risky, slow and expensive. American publishing belonged to, and in, New York City. But we survived, paid back our bank loan, and High Color went through four printings to become a regional best seller. We were hooked. Today it's a different landscape. The digital revolution and on-demand printing has tipped the scales in favor of small independent publishers. Handsome illustrated books are still our first love, but we have branched out into fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry. All our books are available in both ink-on-paper editions and electronic editions.
Western Eye Press is as much an adventure as a business. We'd love to receive your thoughts and reactions to our books. You can reach us via the email link on each page of this web site. And of course, we will pass on any emails to our authors and contributors. Publishing at its best is a two-way communication.
